Of all the new “Emerging” varieties that have been planted in McLaren Vale in the last 20 years Nero d’Avola, native to Sicily, adapts exceptionally well to the warm Mediterranean climate of McLaren Vale and has proven to be more than suitable. The amount of water used to irrigate it is on par with other drought tolerant varieties like Grenache. This similarity in climate helps the grape thrive and express it’s best qualities in this region.
And for us, to be truly sustainable, not just farming organically/biodynamically the amount water we use to get anything to grow is of vital importance, it’s our most precious resource.
